Stimulant designer drugs

Designer stimulants are synthetic or modified substances created to mimic established stimulant drugs such as cocaine, amphetamines or methamphetamine. They often use legal loopholes to evade detection or exploit legal loopholes by having a slightly altered chemical structure compared to controlled substances while still producing the same effects. These substances are also known as “research chemical”, “legal highs” or “new psychoactive substance (NPS)”.

Designer stimulants work by increasing levels of neurotransmitters such as dopamine and norepinephrine in the brain. This leads to an increase in alertness, energy and focus. These substances can have an empathogenic effect, which promotes feelings of social connection and emotional closeness.
