Cathinones

Synthetic cathinone is a designer drug commonly known as “bath salts.” They are chemically related to cathinone, which is a naturally occurring stimulant that can be found in the leaves (Catha edulis) of the khat plants native to East Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, and other parts of Africa. These substances mimic stimulants such as amphetamines and cocaine. They are also known for their strong psychoactive properties.

Synthetic cathinones can be found as white or brown powders that are snorted or smoked. They can also be injected. Some well-known synthetic cathinone includes mephedrone (4-MMC), methylenedioxypyrovalerone (MDPV), and alpha-pyrrolidinopentiophenone (alpha-PVP, also known as “Flakka”).
