Opioids

Synthetic opioids, also known as synthetic opioids or semi-synthetics such as oxycodone or hydrocodone, are powerful substances created artificially that mimic the effects found in naturally occurring opioids. Opioids have analgesic properties (pain relief). They work by binding opioid receptors within the brain and central nerve system.

Some synthetic opioids may be prescribed in medical settings to treat moderate to severe pain. However, other synthetic opioids can be manufactured and sold illegally as recreational drugs. Some synthetic opioids are much stronger than their natural or semisynthetic equivalents. This increases the risk of addiction and overdose.
